Chocolate Buttercream Icing

This is probably my favorite kind of icing I make because it has an amazing chocolate flavor.

I make chocolate icing the most out of any other flavor. My family loves chocolate and want me to make chocolate for any of their cakes. So, I have perfected my recipie after making it so many times.

The key to a great chocolate buttercream for me is the chocolate milk. I realized that the icing will definitely taste better if you use a higher quality chocolate milk.

Cupcakes, cookies, cake, or many other things are perfect for topping with this chocolate buttercream. Or, you could even just eat it with a spoon!

I also made these chocolate covered strawberries for the cake I decorated. I wanted to give the cake another element, and chocolate strawberries taste amazing!

To make the strawberries, I just melted a cup of chocolate chips in a metal bowl above a small pot of boiling water. Make sure you continuously stir the chocolate until it melts or the chocolate will burn.

If you want a little decoration on the strawberries, put some sprinkles on top (I used gold :)).

Here is the Icing recipie.

Equipment

  • stand mixer

Ingredients

  • 1 cup cocoa powder
  • 5 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 cup butter softened
  • ½ cup chocolate milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  • Mix the cocoa powder and powdered sugar in the stand up mixer until combined.
  • Mix the butter with the cocoa and powdered sugar mixture on low speed until combined (I turn the mixer on and off in the beginning because it may spill).
  • Add the chocolate milk and mix on low until just combined.
  • Add the vanilla extract and the turn the mixer to medium high speed and mix until the icing turns to a lighter color (about 2 minutes).
  • Spread onto cake or cupkakes and enjoy!

Notes

The consistency of this buttercream is medium which is great for icing cakes and cupcakes. If you want a thicker icing for decorations on the cake, reduce the amount of chocolate milk.
